Bogbean, Menyanthes trifoliata
Parts used: Leaves, collected after flowering.
Constituents: Iridoid glycosides, Flavonoids, Coumarins, Alkaloids, Saponins, Essential oil.
Actions: Diuretic, Anti-rheumatic, Bitter tonic, Laxative, Cholagogue.
Rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular rheumatism.
Anorexia, dyspepsia, poor appetite.
Tones the GI tract (in small doses).
Cleanses the GI tract (in high doses).
Herbal extract: 10-30mL per week.
Energetics: Cooling, dry, very bitter, pungent.
Meridians: liver, lung, large intestine.
Contraindications: Diarrhoea, colitis, dysentery.
