Cascara Sagrada, Rhamnus purshiana
Parts used: Bark.
Constituents: Hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides, resins, tannins, and lipids.
Actions: Laxative, Constipation, Cathartic.
Cascarosides exhibit a cathartic effect that induces the large intestine to increase its muscular contraction (peristalsis), causing a bowel movement .
Tonic for the bowels .
Herbal extract: 10-20mL per week.
Caution: Overdose/long term usage can cause loss of electrolytes and fluid imbalance.
Contraindications: Pregnancy, breast feeding.
