Chaste Tree, Vitex agnus-castus
Parts used: Berries.
Constituents: Iridoid glycosides, Flavonoids, Essential oils, Sterols, Fatty acids, Vit C, Salicylate 18µg per mL.
Actions: Regulates female hormones through the Pituitary. Amphoteric: ↑progesterone, ↑dopamine, ↓prolactin and ↓aldosterone, Anti-androgen mild, Galactagogue.
Indications:
Menstrual disorders; secondary amenorrhoea, cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium, heavy, frequent bleeding, shortened cycle, infrequent cycle Infertility with abnormal progesterone, PMS +B6, premenstrual aggravation e.g. migraine, herpes, knee effusions, ovulation pain, fibroids, endometriosis, follicular ovarian cysts, to re-establish the cycle after the use of oral contraceptives, Menopausal problems, flushing, fluid retention, excess weight gain, anxiety, depression and nervousness.
Fibroadenoma of the breast; 2mL in the morning for 3 months +30echinacea, 30skullcap, 25paeonia, 15thuja 5mL 3x daily.
Acne with pms.
Stimulates milk production in low doses.
Herbal extract: 6-18mL per week, use one dose of 2mL in the morning.
Energetics: Neutral, dry, pungent, sweet.
Meridians: liver, kidney, spleen, lung.
Contraindications: Large doses should be avoided. Not for children, postmenopausal women or with HRT, oral contraceptives. Side effects may be present such as headache and mastalgia.
Can disrupt the cycle in first two months but improvements usually occur quite quickly with this herb, but to ensure a lasting benefit it should be continued for at least six months. Can go on tablets after results.
