Gymnema, Gymnema sylvestre
Parts used: Leaves.
Constituents: Resins, gymnemic acids, saponins, quercitol, and the amino acid derivatives betaine, choline and trimethylamine.
Actions: Diuretic, Astringent, Hypoglycaemic, Refrigerant, Stomachic, Tonic, Anti-obesity.
Mechanisms of Action: Increases urine output and reduces high blood sugar levels.
Gymnema extracts doubled the number of insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas and returned blood sugars to almost normal Gymnema increases the activity of enzymes responsible for glucose uptake and utilization, and inhibits peripheral utilization of glucose by somatotrophin and corticotrophin Plant extracts have also been found to inhibit epinephrine-induced hyperglycaemia, reduces appetite.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus, fever, cough, Somatic burning sensations, biliousness, haemorrhoids, and urinary disorders, sugar destroyer, stops sugar craving.
Herbal extract 1:1, 20-70mL per week or 5mL before food twice a day.
Energetics: Astringent, pungent, dry Heating. Dosha: KV- P+.
For 24-percent gymnemic acids, is 400-600 mg daily.
