Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis
Parts used: Herb.
Constituents: Volatile oils, Bitter, Tannins.
Actions: Anti-spasmodic, Relaxant, Sedative, Carminative, Antidepressant, Diaphoretic, Vasodilator, Anti-viral, Emmenagogue, Antagonist to TSH.
Indications:
Especially of nervous origin.
Anxiety based indigestion and stomach problems.
Tension headaches, insomnia, palpitations, and panic attacks.
Irregular and painful periods.
Flatulence, colic.
Depression (anxiety), restless sleep.
Fevers, colds, flu, asthma, bronchitis.
Hypertension especially stress related.
Herpes simplex 1 and 2.
Water based creams, or infusions applied directly to lesions.
Esp. with emotions due to stress +rue.
Hyperthyroidism.
Tea is very good for stress and difficulty going to sleep + Passion flower.
Herbal extract: 20-45mL per week.
Energetics: Bitter, astringent, dry, cooling, and sour (all mildly).
Meridians: heart, pericardium, triple burner, lung, liver, kidney, bladder.
Contraindications: Hypothyroidism, seems to work amphoterically though.
