Plantain, Plantago major
Parts used: Leaves.
Constituents: Iridoid glycosides, Flavonoids, Tannins, Organic acids, Vitamins: C, K.
Minerals: calcium, potassium, sulphur and trace minerals.
Actions: Anti-inflammatory, Diuretic, Aperient, Anti-haemorrhagic, Alterative, Vulnerary, Astringent.
Indications:
Urinary tract, cystitis, prostatitis, calculus.
Haematuria.
Haemorrhoids.
Bites and stings.
Externally: the leaf can be applied locally to wounds, haemorrhoids, or as an eyewash for conjunctivitis, blepharitis and mouthwash for mouth ulcers and inflammations, rub leaf and apply in ear for earache.
Same as Karaka, Top heals, stops bleeding. Bottom draws cysts, boils.
Herbal extract: 20-60mL per week.
Energetics: Astringent, bitter, dry, cooling. Dosha: V+ PK-.
Meridians: lung, bladder, large intestine.
